Office chair is an important part of office furniture
because you spend almost 6-8 hours on office chairs.
Lately, the designs of the humble office chairs are now
being scientifically studied as part of Ergonomics.

Ergonomics is a science that studies the human workplace
and the physical component of the work. Ergonomics tries to
design the workplace including office furniture in such a
manner that it is adapted to human capabilities and the
human body, keeping in mind the physical tasks that you
have to perform on the job.

The word Ergonomics has a Greek root. It comes from the
word 'ergon' meaning work and 'nomoi' meaning natural laws.
The basic principles of Ergonomics are -

* All work activities should allow the worker to adopt
different, but safe postures.

* The largest possible muscle groups available should exert
muscular force.

* Work activities should be performed with the joints at
about mid-point of their range of movement.

Physical work varies from job to job. A construction worker
or a nurse is in a more physically demanding job than say
an accountant, manager or any other office worker. Yet, the
risk of physical injury is as real for the office worker as
it is for the construction worker.

Office work involves sitting in an office chair in front of
the computer screen for several hours during the day. That
does not put too much physical strain on the body, one
would think. Nothing could be further from the truth. Even
the office chairs can cause severe injuries and problems.

If the office chair is not designed well, it could force
the body into uncomfortable postures that could result in
back pain or injury in the end.

Without a firm back support, one finds the body slouching
forward, which could strain the spinal ligament and the
spinal discs. Sitting in a single posture in the office
chair for the entire day is typically an unnatural activity
for the human body.

The various parts of the office chairs should be easily
adjustable to avoid this problem. Similarly, it is often
difficult to adjust the height of the table to suit the
person who could be tall or short. However, the office
chair should be the kind where the height can be easily
adjusted.

The use of ergonomic concepts and an understanding of body
mechanics to the design of the office chair can go a long
way in minimizing physical injury at the workplace and
result in a stress free work environment.
